The Ocean's films, and Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven in particular, have come to define the modern idea of the heist movie. The tropes established in the movie have been imitated, referenced, and parodied across modern entertainment to the point of ubiquity. Outside of Marvel's Avengers movies which culminated in their own MCU heist story , of course , the Ocean's franchise was also one of the last film sagas that required all-star ensemble casts of movie stars, with the requisite challenges of finding something creative and memorable in the plot for each actor to do.
At the very least, the Ocean's movies are colorful entertainment that isn't meant to be taken too seriously but relies on an abundance of charm, style, effortless cool, and likeability, much like Danny Ocean himself. Let's pull the job! Unfortunately, the film is a meandering mess. Sinatra and his gang shot the picture on the off hours during their Las Vegas performances and it contains little in the way of urgency or real stakes.
Instead, the Rat Pack relies on their collective charm, wisecracks, in-jokes, and real-life camaraderie so that they're essentially just playing themselves casually inching through the film's plot. Even as a product of its time, Ocean's Eleven is a drag to sit through and its best contribution to pop culture is inspiring Steven Soderbergh's infinitely superior remake.
Tasked with following up his critically acclaimed blockbuster, Steven Soderbergh reassembled the entire cast for Ocean's Twelve , along with new additions Catherine Zeta-Jones as Brad Pitt 's love interest and Vincent Cassel as a new villain, the Night Fox, who competes with Danny Ocean for the title of best thief in the world.
Unfortunately, the exotic European locales Amsterdam, Rome, Lake Como don't make up for a convoluted and impenetrable plot and the film's sheer excess. The heists Ocean's team pulls also are much less interesting than how they took down the Bellagio in the film. Danny's crew seem relatively unphased by their lives being in jeopardy and they coast through the film's labyrinthine story.
Zeta-Jones' relationship with Brad Pitt is a highlight, as is the opportunity to see a continuation of Brad Pitt's habit of always eating in movies. While Ocean's Twelve maintains the tongue-in-cheek charm that made Ocean's Eleven work so well, it occasionally takes it too far. Elliott Gould puffs on his cigar three different times for this very reason. The movie takes inventory of its characters with the same droll wit it does everything else.
The original original "Ocean's 11," made in by the Rat Pack, was a send-up of s caper movies it was inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville's French classic " Bob le Flambeur ". The new original "Ocean's Eleven" was a successful attempt by Soderbergh to doodle with the formula, much as a pianist might pick out a tune just well enough to show he could play it if he wanted to.
This isn't a caper movie at all, it's an improvisation on caper themes. If at times it seems like a caper, well, as the fellow said when he got up from the piano, it might not be Beethoven, but it has a lot of the same notes. What Soderbergh is working with here is the charm of his actors, particularly Clooney, Roberts, Brad Pitt and Jones, who have the key roles, and the puppy-dog earnestness of Matt Damon , who wakes up Pitt on a trans-Atlantic flight to tell him he thinks he's ready to play "a more central role.
When one character is excoriated as agoraphobic what a wonderful phrase that is, "excoriated as agoraphobic," don't you think it's almost musical? Linus doesn't understand a word, which is reasonable, but what he doesn't realize is that they don't, either. They doubt they can raise this much money in the two weeks until their deadline, especially since it appears that another thief, the Night Fox, is in business against them, and is either more skilled than they are, or a supernatural being.
As they contemplate the security surrounding one of their targets, Pitt flatly states: "In the physical universe we live in, it cannot be done. Occasionally their plans take the long way around. Consider a man in Amsterdam who has sealed himself and his treasures inside a house guarded with multiple alarm systems and never leaves home.
Surveillance indicates there is a control pad on an inner wall which might be manipulated to bypass the alarms. How to reach it? Their plan involves getting underneath the house, which is beside a canal and rests on underwater pylons, and using hydraulic lifts to raise the house one inch, so that a difficult shot with an arrow becomes possible.
Uh, huh. With overhead like that, when do they reach their break-even point? Rather than describe some of their other targets, such as a priceless jeweled egg, I will observe that all of the targets are MacGuffins, that it matters not what they go after but how they do it, and what they say in the process.
The movie is all about behavior, dialogue, star power and wiseass in-jokes. Video Photos Top cast Edit. Nelson Peltz Partygoer as Partygoer. Mini Anden Supermodel as Supermodel. When that line-of-sight is interrupted, security is alerted. Lasers randomly sweeping a room and the objects in it, obviously have no receivers, and such a system could not work.

Thus Ocean and his crew must scramble together what they owe; too hot to work in America, they set their sights on Amsterdam Another thief under the alias of "nightfox" Vincent Cassel is keen to battle it out with Ocean and his team; to decide who the best thief or thieves are.
And there you have Ocean's 12; a film which falls too short in terms of wit, appearance, plot One thing must be made clear, however; the cast is great. Spectacular really. There is a definite and rare chemistry between everyone; even Catherina Zeta-Jones, newcomer to the Soderbergh film.
And it is indeed very rare to jam-pack a film with so many big name celebs without the film being ruined by too much star power and not enough of anything else. And watching Ocean's 11, you can tell that the crew enjoyed making this film. Unfortunately, the audience may not gain the same pleasure as the actors did If you were like me, absolutely blown away by the chic and jazzy first film, then Ocean's 12 will be a disappointment.
The first movie was simply 'classy'. All of the shots, every single take, camera angles were all very clean-cut, solid and very stylish.
